Amanda Perez

Following her Virgin Records platinum debut album I Pray with the hit singles “I Pray” and “Angel” the record label asked her to go back to California to record again, but she told them she wanted to record in her hometown in the first studio she had ever recorded in – Monastic Chambers. The record label was doubtful at first, but said that they would try it and if the tracks were done to their standards she could record wherever she wanted. She recorded the first song... and has been working on the album little by little in our studio ever since.

Gucci Mane

One day my phone rings and the voice on the other end says, "This is Gucci Mane’s manager, and we’re on tour through the area. We asked around and everyone said your studio is the best in town, so we want to come in there tonight." Thinking it was a joke, and not really knowing Gucci Mane was a platinum selling rap artist, I told him I had a session booked for that evening. Then they said, "We’ll give you a hundred dollars an hour if you cancel it." I said I would, not knowing if it was for real or not, but luckily the session I had booked was the Mimi Burns Band and they are very laid back!

Gucci Mane arrived with his entourage later that evening, and most of the Fort Wayne hip-hop luminaries were soon to follow. He selected a beat by Eclipse, and went on to record “East Atlanta” which he released on a mix tape shortly thereafter. I’ve never had a session with tighter security – Gucci’s bodyguards were posted outside the studio door!

Scott Mathews

Scott Mathews has worked with everybody – it’s almost easier to list the people he HASN’T worked with! He has five
Grammys and a pedigree that makes a midwestern classic rocker salivate. Here’s a small portion of the many people
he’s worked with:

Eric Clapton, Elvis Costello, John Lee Hooker, Dave Edmunds, Keith Richards, John Hiatt, Dave Grisman,
Van Morrison, Huey Lewis, Semisonic, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Barbara Streisand (!?!), The Grateful
Dead, Brian Wilson, Ringo Starr
...you get the idea...

Scott rockin out with Jerry GarciaScott and Joey Ramone

Scott has produced four albums with Monkey Wings Records, three of them recorded completely at Monastic
Chambers. It was strange sitting in the engineer’s chair with a producer who had duct-taped a pair of headphones
onto Keith Moon’s head once sitting right behind me, but once I got over the star-struck feeling, I found that we
worked in very similar ways, which was encouraging. Also, I think I learned a thing or two about how to produce a
great record while I worked with him.

Scott hangin with a couple of legends

We did The Pillars of Society’s (now The Mooncrickets) Short Stories as well as Pheen’s Vacant Afternoons, and
Mystikos’ Wonders, and The Legendary Trainhoppers pre-production work here, actually recording all the songs three
times prior to going to Scott’s studio in San Francisco for the final tracking.

Scott told the president of Monkey Wings Records that he was comfortable working in three studios in the world: his
own studio – “Tiki Town”, Skywalker Sound, and Monastic Chambers, which he began referring to as “Tiki East”!

Frank-O Johnson

Originally, Frank-O wanted to be a soul singer, but he was hired by Mo-Town Records in the sixties as a songwriter, and penned tunes that have been laid down by the Temptations, Johnny Taylor, Aretha Franklin, Leslie Uggams, and so many more that it would be difficult to name. He has had over 1000 songs he’s written recorded and released nationally. In the early 1990’s, he formed Phat Sound Records and began releasing albums by artists who had once been famous but more recently overlooked, such as Gwen MacCrea, who had the hit song “Rockin’ Chair” and released a follow up album on Phat Sound called Still Rockin. Frank-O was recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and spends most of his time managing the record company, recording the Frank-O Smooth Radio Soul Show, which is nationally syndicated, and managing Crown Dog Publishing, which handles all of his own songs as well as other artists.
