Now, a defunct band, Júso had its wild ride from 1985 through 1994. Originally formed by Jon Gillespie and the original lead guitarist from the band PETRA, Greg Hough, in the Chicago area, they moved home base in 1989 to Fort Wayne, Indiana ...the Midwest being the hotbed of commercial hard rock contemporary Christian music that it was.
Júso (pronounced "who-so") released four albums: Júso (self-titled), Júso (Who-so), Live On Broadway, and Watch A Wall Fall. All of these were released on cassette only, but became hot little items throughout the Christian rock scene in the Midwest. Júso played from Minnesota, to Pennsylvania, and everywhere in-between. They played with the Imperials, Degarmo and Key, Rick Elias, numerous regional bands, and of course, the inimitable "Nugwhalzer and the Nuclear Chickens."
Winning the Agape Fest battle of the bands, a national contest featuring bands from the far reaches of North America, national record companies such as Star Song began taking notice -- which is of course when regional bands self-destruct... a sad, but all too often common scenario.
At the time when Júso disintegrated, it consisted of Jonny Gillespie (keyboards and b.g.v.s), Greg Hough (lead guitar, b.g.v.s), Jeremy Gillespie (rhythm guitar, lead and background vocals), Kirk McKinley (bass and b.g.v.s), Justin Gillespie (drums & b.g.v.s ), and Lori Benward (lead vocals and sister of Geoffrey Benward, currently of Aaron & Geoffrey). They had been touring in support of their best selling album, Watch A Wall Fall, and was also in pre-production for its fifth album at the time. Many of those songs (written by Jon and Jeremy Gillespie) have been re-worked and will someday be released by "The Heebie G.B.s."
Júso was propelled by powerful guitar rhythms and huge beds of backing vocals and keyboard textures. They shared their beliefs in their songs with boldness and unabashed certainty. They were certainly a "message band." If you miss the sound of 80's hard rock... well, so do I!
